Thick, creamy, and refreshing, this Vietnamese Avocado Smoothie is a sweet treat that only requires a handful of ingredients! It’s easy to make and tastes just like what you’d get at a restaurant. It comes together in a flash in the blender.
There are a few names for this delicious avocado drink. You may find this under Vietnamese avocado shake, avocado milkshake, Sinh Tố Bơ, or just avocado smoothie. Regardless of what you call it, you’ll be wishing you made more after your first sip.
Growing up, my mom would always make me this avocado smoothie whenever avocados were on sale. It was truly the best and set the bar so high that I could only order this out at a couple of locations because so many just did not live up to the standard!
Whenever I’m missing her, I would whip up a big glass of this avocado shake and be immediately reminded of home. It took a few tries and I definitely shed a few tears while yelling to my partner “WHY DOESN’T IT TASTE LIKE HER’S” but eventually we got there. It’s been a few years now and I still turn to this whenever I want to be reminded of my childhood and I hope you enjoy this avocado milkshake recipe as much as I do.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- avocados — make sure they are ripe. Keep in mind that while the skin colour is a good indicator of ripeness, not all varieties will change colour when ripe. I usually get Hass avocado.
- sweeten condensed milk — this is a key ingredient and adds to the avocado shake that rich creamy taste.
- milk — I find whole full-fat dairy milk to give the me the best results. You can add more to thin out the shake but I like mine super thick. I love eating it with a spoon haha.
- ice
How to Make a Vietnamese Avocado Smoothie
- To a blender, add all of the ingredients.
- Blend until smooth. Add additional milk to thin it if desired.
- Serve immediately.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- Enjoy this with a jumbo straw or a spoon. A thin straw won’t cut it and it’s difficult to take sips from the glass. You’ve been warned haha.
- The ice keeps this cold and thick. Don’t worry too much about the ice diluting the drink because it is SO thick already. However, don’t go overboard. You only need a small handful of ice.
- Growing up, I would put this in the freezer as well so it’s almost like an ice cream!
- I prefer fresh avocado to frozen avocado for this. You can experiment with frozen avocado but I think the drink is creamy enough without having to freeze the avocados.
- While called a “smoothie,” I would treat this avocado drink as more of a dessert. It’s quite sweet and not the lightest in calories so I don’t recommend drinking this every morning like you would a traditional smoothie.
