This homemade pumpkin spice latte recipe comes together in only a few easy steps! Using real pumpkin puree and a handful of kitchen staples, you’ll have this cozy latte in no time. It’s perfectly spiced, creamy, and sweetened with maple syrup.

The moment Starbucks announces its pumpkin spice latte season, you can catch me running to line up to grab myself a venti. This year, I had a PSL three days in a row before I had to tell myself to chill out as I shouldn’t blow all my money on lattes lol. So, now that I’ve gotten my official fill of the official pumpkin spice latte, I’m back at home making my homemade version. And if you’re in the same boat as me, here’s my recipe!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s much more budget-friendly to make pumpkin spice latte at home. Whenever I go, I get one for my partner and I, so for the two of us, it comes out to around $13. It costs a fraction of that to make it at home.
  • It’s pretty easy to make! You don’t need anything fancy to make a homemade PSL. I use a Nespresso and Smeg milk frother, but you can easily make it with what you have on hand.
  • It’s made with simple, real ingredients! Pumpkin puree, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, milk, and espresso!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make pumpkin spice latte.
  • espresso — I’m using a vanilla pod from Nespresso, so it has vanilla flavor combined with sweet biscuits and cereal notes. Feel free to brew any espresso of your choice with your preferred method or half a cup of cold brew or strongly freshly brewed coffee.
  • pumpkin puree — make sure you are using pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. They’re usually side by side on the shelves, but pumpkin pie filling is seasoned and sweetened. Try my homemade pumpkin puree if you can’t find it in a can!
  • pumpkin pie spice — pumpkin pie spice is made up of a wonderful blend of warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
  • maple syrup — I prefer maple syrup, but you can use your favorite sweetener.
  • milk — I use whole milk, but you can use any milk of choice, such as oat milk or almond milk.

  • Prepare your coffee. I use a coffee maker to make my espresso.
  • To a measuring cup, add the pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, maple syrup, and espresso and mix until well combined.

  • Heat (and froth if desired) the milk until it is very hot (but not boiling). I use my Smeg, but you can also heat up the milk in a small saucepan. Add it to the pumpkin puree and coffee mixture.
  • Mix until well combined. Serve as is or strain it through a fine mesh sieve.

  • Push as much of the drink through the sieve as possible.
  • Serve immediately with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice if desired.

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • I personally run my latte through a fine mesh strainer, as the spices can get a little gritty in the drink. The pumpkin thickens the drink as well and I prefer a smoother drink.
  • Honey or brown sugar makes for a great alternative to maple syrup.
  • As pumpkin puree does not have a strong pumpkin flavor, the pumpkin pie spice does a lot of the heavy lifting in flavoring this latte. Make sure your spice bottle is relatively fresh, as stale spices will lead to a disappointing drink.
  • Alternatively, you can add everything but the espresso to a blender and blend it all up before adding the espresso to make for a deliciously creamy drink.
