Black Sesame Milk – Carmy

A milk alternative, this Black Sesame Milk is an easy delicious drink. This dairy-free milk is nutty and sweet on top of being vegan-friendly.

Black sesame milk at the store is hard to come by. Previously, I could just swing over to a T&T in less than 15 minutes, but now it’s a 2 hour one way drive, so I’ve had to make do and make my own.

It’s luckily not too difficult to make. The process is the same as making almond milk. You just have to soak the sesame seeds and then blend them up. Add as much or little sweetener as you want.

What You’ll Need to Make Sesame Milk

Ingredients needed to make black sesame milk.
  • black sesame seeds — make sure they’re fresh and not stale.
  • salt — just a pinch to help bring out the flavours.
  • vanilla — I always recommend real vanilla extract over artificial for the best flavour.
  • maple syrup — you can use honey if you don’t need it to be vegan.
  • filtered water

  • Soak the sesame seeds in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes. Be sure there’s enough water to cover the seeds.
  • Rinse and drain, using a fine-mesh sieve.
  • Transfer to the blender with a pinch of salt, vanilla extract, maple syrup, and 4 cups of cold filtered water.
  • Blend on high speed for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Taste and add more maple syrup if desired.
  • Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or a nut milk bag or a cheesecloth. Squeeze out as much liquid as you can.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge if not enjoyed immediately.

Recipe Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of water added to the blender. It really depends on how thick or thin you’d like to make your milk.
  • Add as much maple syrup to this as you like. I usually like mine sweeter than how H like his.
  • You can also soak a date and add it to the blender as well for additional sweetness.
