Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Make them year-round on the grill or on the stovetop. It’s a versatile recipe!
  • It’s easy to make. If you’re using pre-made patties, this avocado burger recipe comes together in less than 20 minutes. You can literally make this recipe faster than it takes for your take-out order to deliver to your front door! It’s a great weeknight meal or when you have guests over!
  • I love how refreshing the mashed avocado is in the burger. It’s such a great texture and flavor combination.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make avocado burgers.
  • oil — to cook the burgers in the cast-iron.
  • burger patties — you can use fresh or frozen burger patties. If you want to use homemade patties, check out the recipe down below!
  • sliced cheese — I use sliced cheddar, but you can use any sliced cheese of your choice.
  • avocado — make sure the avocados are ripe. Give them a squeeze, and if they give, they’re good to go. If they’re firm, you’ll have to wait another day or two.
  • lemon juice — fresh lemon juice is best as it doesn’t have the slightly bitter taste bottled lemon juice has. This will help keep the mashed avocados from browning quickly.
  • garlic powder and salt — to add a little flavor to the mashed avocados.
  • brioche buns — I loooooove brioche buns, but you can use any burger bun of your choice.
  • toppings — the best part of any burger! I love a good mix of toppings. I use lettuce leaves, sliced red onions, and crispy bacon pieces. And for the sauce, I like giving everyone the option between ketchup, bbq sauce, mustard, or mayo. I also love roasted garlic and caramelized onions as a topping.

  • In a cast iron skillet with some olive oil on it, add 4 burger patties. Cook them for around 4 to 6 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and size of your burgers. Add an extra minute if they are frozen. Set aside.
  • Add 1 slice of cheese to each burger and melt; cover with a skillet lid and melt cheese for 1-2 minutes. Set aside the patties.

How to Make Homemade Burger Patties

Want homemade patties instead of buying them? Try this recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1⅓ pounds ground chuck or beef
  • ⅓ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1½ tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix all the ingredients by hand until the meat mixture is smooth. Avoid overmixing, or you’ll have dense burgers.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into balls.
  • Flatten the balls into patties just slightly larger than the buns you plan to use and press down in the center, so there’s a slight dent on each of the patties to prevent them from puffing up when cooked.

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • If you want to make these avocado burgers in the air fryer, check out my air fryer frozen burger recipe.
  • To cook the patties on the grill, place the burger patties on the grill and cook, uncovered, for 3 to 5 minutes a side, depending on the thickness of the patties.
  • You can add more fresh herb flavor to the mashed avocado by mixing in fresh chopped cilantro, basil, chives, or parsley. Some lemon zest will add a touch of brightness too.
  • A handful of alfalfa sprouts on top of the mashed avocado layer adds an extra touch of freshness to the burgers.
  • You can mash the avocado as chunky or smooth as you prefer. Keeping it on the slightly chunky side, I find, stays on the burger better.

How do I cut an avocado?

Slice the avocado lengthwise until you feel the knife hit the pit. Turn the avocado on its side and turn it while continuing to cut it in half with the knife. Then twist the two halves to separate them. You can spoon the avocado out of peel off the skin before dicing it. Since you’re mashing the avocados, you don’t need perfectly clean cuts. You can just spoon it all out if you prefer.
